This interactive eLearning course will engage TEI practitioners into critical reflection of how current systems and approaches pathologise children and may discount children’s experiences of abuse, neglect, and suffering.
The medicalisation of trauma and behaviour can cause us to overlook what children need for healing and recovery. This course will explore the adverse impacts of solely holding medical or behavioural paradigms when working with children who experience trauma and mental health difficulties, and the need to apply a critical perspective.
The content will also focus on taking a dive into linguistics and will unveil children’s underlying needs for safety and connection.
This self-paced (60 Minutes) eLearning Course will enable you to:
- Learn critical reflection skills on how current systems, structures and approaches pathologise and medicalise trauma for children and young people.
- Increase your awareness of the significance of language and its impact when working with children and young people who have experienced harm, oppression and trauma.
- Develop skills in identifying and assessing children’s underlying needs and provide tools for responding to children and young people who communicate their trauma experiences and distress through behavioural and emotional presentations.
- Build self-awareness skills for identifying what activates or triggers our reactions as workers and explore this.
The Target Audience for this course is all practitioners supporting vulnerable and at-risk children and their families. It is especially relevant to workers in Service Providers who are funded by the Department of Communities and Justice, under the Targeted Earlier Intervention (TEI) program.
