On the Run (Accidental) Counselling

How can YOU make a positive difference to those in need?

While you are not a formally trained counsellor, do you often find yourself in situations where you need to respond to someone’s distress, concerns, or strong emotions?

Whether it’s a colleague under pressure, a parent navigating challenges, or a child and family facing difficulties, these “accidental counselling” moments can be challenging to navigate.

In today’s demanding world, it’s crucial to have the skills to navigate these conversations with confidence and compassion to make a positive difference to those in need!

This full-day transformative workshop is designed to equip you with the tools to become a more effective and empathetic communicator, responding appropriately to those who are distressed.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore Overlaps: Understand the overlap between your key work responsibilities and ‘on the spot’ counselling.
  • Accidental Counselling vs. Formal Counselling: Discuss the key differences between formal counselling and accidental counselling.
  • Personal Values: Explore how personal values influence the communication process.
  • Communication Skills: Build on your communication and response skills using a strength-based approach.
  • Supporting the Distressed: Explore the brain’s functioning when stressed and identify strategies to support someone in distress.

We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the cultures and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the nation. A better understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures develops an enriched appreciation for Australia’s cultural heritage and can lead to reconciliation. This is essential to the maturity of Australia as a nation and fundamental to the development of an Australian identity. Understanding and respect are guiding principles of LEAD’s Reconciliation Action Plan.
