Learning Outcomes:
- understand the differences between guidance versus behaviourist (or controlling) beliefs and values;
- appreciate how to prevent children’s distress by making expectations achievable for them;
- understand how to meet children’s emotional needs;
- understand the nature of self-esteem;
- grasp the differences between praise versus acknowledgment
- learn some methods for responding to children during a lapse of self-regulation, and
- anticipate some of parents’ objections and questions and how to address these.

Facilitator
Dr Louise Porter is a child psychologist with 40 years’ experience in private practice consulting with parents and practitioners about children’s developmental and social or emotional challenges. She has over 10 years of experience working in disability and mainstream education settings and for 13 years she lectured at university in topics relating to early childhood, special and gifted education, and behaviour management.
