Wednesday 31 May 2023, what a wonderful day of learning and sharing with Paul Newman as LEAD celebrated National Reconciliation Week 2023.
Paul Newman, with a proud Wiradjuri, Gadigal, Wailwan and Kamilaroi nations heritage took us on a journey back in time… the 1967 referendum, the 1991 report from the landmark enquiry “Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody”, the milestone 1992 Australian High Court, Mabo decision, to 1996, when the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation launched Australia’s first National Reconciliation Week, the report from the “National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families” enquiry published in 1997, followed by the monumental display of support for reconciliation in 2000, the People’s Walk for Reconciliation, where 250,000 Australians walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, then in 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart issued and in 2023 a Voice to Parliament!
Thank you so much Paul Newman for facilitating our learning.
Thank you to Councillor Susai Benjamin from Blacktown City Council and Amar Singh, 2023 Australian of the Year Local Hero, for joining us for this event. A shout-out to our colleagues from the Community Sector who joined the event to learn and reflect with us.
